The Hebrew word "Tikkun" can be traced back to the early rabbinic period (the first few centuries of the Common Era) when it generally meant "to repair."

In the Kabbalah (particularly during the medieval period) the meaning of the word Tikkun came to include the repair of the world in a cosmic or spiritual sense.

This spiritual repair, explained in the Kabbalah, requires extraordinary depth and understanding.  Consequently, genuine tikkun is rare -- even among individuals familiar with kabbalistic teachings.

In the absence of a fully integral understanding, the word "tikkun" has become associated with social-action projects, environmental initiatives, and political agendas.  (See essay by Jill Jacobs on the history of the term "Tikkun Olam.")

As important as these contemporary efforts and accomplishments are, most fall short of effectively and consistently directing our focus to the levels of the subconscious mind where the kabbalistic processes of tikkun begin.

Behind the scenes here at RabbiTom.com and mamash.org we are reclaiming, or bringing to light, the deeper meaning of the word "tikkun."  That is to say, we are consciously engaging in the inner work of restoration and repair.

Come on in to see what we're working on...
